SUMMARY:DISRUPT Festival
DESCRIPTION:DISRUPT is a festival that brings together artists\, communities\, researchers\, charities and schools\, harnessing collective learnings from an arduous year to reimagine the role of the arts in our societies. \n‘The arts sits within broken or breaking systems\, acting as a microcosm for broader inequalities and inaction experienced by society. This plays out in various ways\, sometimes through the hierarchical ways in which arts organisations engage with communities. How can we collectively ensure this work responds to community needs now\, in an equitable\, empowering and inclusive way?” \nDISRUPT is an antidote to some of these issues. It attempts to explore different ways of working with communities\, centring lived experience\, representation\, and community voice. \nThis event is coordinated by Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Barbican\, in partnership with Culture\, Health and Wellbeing Alliance\, Culture Mile\, Lived Experience Network\, Maya Productions\, and Slung Low.

SUMMARY:Transnational Literature and Writing: Follow the Sun
DESCRIPTION:An international\, online conference on Transnational Literature and Writing\, hosted by Bath Spa University and Paper Nations.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nTravel the world without leaving your home and join a dynamic summit of writers\, artists and scholars at Follow the Sun\, an online literature and writing conference hosted by Transnational Literature\, Paper Nations\, and TRACE at Bath Spa University on January 28th-30th. Tickets are available on a sliding scale\, depending on your income\, location\, and range of events you wish to attend. \nFollow the Sun is a literary festival-meets-conference\, a summit of citizens from around the world embarking on a creative and thought-provoking journey through transnational literature\, writing\, and performance. Follow the Sun is ideal for anyone who is in need of creative renewal. You may be an artist or scholar yourself\, or simply curious about new ideas\, creative writing\, and global debate. \nThe summit’s key theme is ‘Place and Displacement’\, inspired by keynote speaker Aminatta Forna\, who said in 2020 that ‘we have seen place displaced’ as a reflection on our current state of being\, both bound at home and displaced from our normal modes of interaction. As such\, this event has no fixed abode\, as it will take place entirely online and ‘follow the sun’ as morning travels around the world\, beginning in Adelaide\, Australia and moving across the sky to Mumbai\, London\, and New York. You will hear stories from award-winning poets\, literary translators\, and novelists. Academics from around the world will share their latest research on detention\, displacement\, and disappearance. Follow the Sun creates a forum for exchange of knowledge and ideas\, placing people from different places within the same spaces for a brief moment in time. \nThe event will culminate on Saturday 30th January with a masterclass (9am – 2pm UK time only) on performance poetry in the online world. Led by renowned writer\, Zena Edwards\, the masterclass is a unique opportunity to meet others\, be inspired\, and hone your public speaking skills. Limited tickets are available and are selling quickly. \nSpeaking about the vision for Follow the Sun\, Bambo Soyinka\, Director of TRACE and founder of Paper Nations said: \n‘For so many of us\, the last year has kept us confined to our own spaces and places\, unable to move\, unable to reflect\, unable to pursue ideas and creative goals. We invite you to follow the sun with us and travel across boundaries and time zones\, virtually stepping into the sun to make connections with scholars and artists\, creative writers and performers\, friends and colleagues\, both old and new. Though we may be bound more than ever to our localities\, by following the sun we can explore different places from within our own spaces\, exchanging knowledge and ideas and embracing the chance to think about where we go from here. At this global event you will encounter people from across the world who will offer you fresh perspectives and ideas. With presentations from India\, the UK\, Austria and America\, the dawn of each new day will bring new opportunities to step outside our homes and greet the morning with renewed energy and purpose.’ \nFollow the Sun boasts 16 events and more than 40 speakers\, ranging from panels on erasing borders\, to readings and performances on individual isolation and alienation. Simply enter the Zoom-room at any time throughout the 24-hr programme and catch up on anything you’ve missed on replay. \nVenture around the globe and follow the sun! \nBook now on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Research in the Arts\, the Arts in Research
DESCRIPTION:Artists study the reality they are surrounded by\, people they live among\, themselves\, their instruments of work and how these areas are interconnected. Their work addresses complex issues\, establishing dynamic relationships to a whole variety of other disciplines\, from philosophy to new technologies. Their creative activity generates knowledge that could not be gained otherwise. Artistic knowledge is acquired through sensory and emotional perception and is practice-based\, practice-driven\, ‘felt’\, ‘embodied’. It crosses the borders of different countries\, languages\, cultures\, disciplines. Many artistic research projects are genuinely multicultural and interdisciplinary. \nYet artists still often have to justify the idea that their practice is research. Academic research too has become increasingly inter- and multidisciplinary. Cultural Literacy [CL] is the ability to think in literary ways about any topic or question\, using the key concepts of textuality\, fictionality\, rhetoricity and historicity (see http://cleurope.eu/about/key-concepts/). How can the creative arts and CL come together to think about the contemporary world?

SUMMARY:A Show of Hands
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition of posters and ephemera is inspired by the manicule\, or printer’s fist\, which has been pointing the way to readers for hundreds of years. Expect quirky wordplay\, visual puns and decorative joy as today’s letterpress practitioners rise to the challenge and join us in A Show of Hands. \nCurated by our visiting research fellow\, Tim Jollands\, this exhibition brings together over eighty printed celebrations of the manicule\, most of them produced specially for the exhibition. We have contributions from a wide range of printers\, including many established and emerging fine-press printers and book artists—Tom Sowden and Jane Shaw from Bath Spa among them! The exhibition will run from 30 September to 19 October. \nIt will be open to the public from 5 to 13 October as part of the town’s Peacock Arts Trail\, and then again 18 to 19 October as part of StoryTown.
